February

February 14, 2010
We met at Sarna and Brent's for a couple's dinner and potluck.
We read The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This lead to much discussion of pre-Civil Rights America, how it has shaped us today, what remains of those times, and how we relate to the people who lived in the South during that time. The book was fiction, but developed multi-dimensional characters who seemed very real by the end of the read. It made it easy to imagine the lives of both the black maids, and their white employers.

We enjoyed having the men with us for the evening, and all agreed to repeat the event again in the future.

The book options were:
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See
The Girls from Ames by Jeffrey Zaslow and
Healing Sands by Nancy Rue and Stephen Arterburn

Next book: Healing Sands
Next meeting: Sunday, March 14th, 7 pm
Host: Lisa
Snacks: Lisa?
Books: Sarna

Review

This first post will include all of the relevant info about our meetings so far! I may need help to remember dates, books, etc. so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

July 12, 2009--FIRST MEETING
Met at Rebecca's
We Read: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

The book was generally liked by the group, provided ample discussion, and was thought-provoking, especially on the subject of parental custody in the case of the death of one parent.
